As timber is a natural product we have no control over variances of colours and features from tree to tree awareness of this should be taken into consideration when choosing and viewing timber flooring Samples are used primarily as an indication only in relation to the variations to each particular species and the features and colour tonings within each particular species and grade.
Each species has its own characteristics of colour tone feature and strength and your floor will vary in appearence on presentation as to how it is processed at the mill ~ ie. backsawn & quarter sawn.
The Janka rating of the timber determines the strength & hardness, this is is not directly related to workability but is a measure of the resistance of the wood to indentation. The hardness figures most commonly quoted are those obtained in theJanka hardness test, which involves the pressing of a steel ball into the test specimen until the ball has pentetrated to half its diameter, forming a cavity with a profected area of 1 cm2. Floor finishes do not improve the hardness of flooring.
Timber Flooring has been Kiln Dried & must be protected from the elements at all times; during loading, transportation and unloading. It should never be delivered when it is raining. It must be stored indoors where it is fully protected from moisture and direct sunlight, off the ground .200mm for cross flow ventilation. Moisture tests taken prior to installation will determine when the right time for installation be. The process of 'acclimatisation' of the timber is so the content of moisture in the timber is to its equilibrium within the environment where it is to be installed, this is important to understand as timber contracts in dry weather and draws in moisture with wet/ humid weather and expands. The timber will naturally do this anyway during different seasons. At some times of the year you will notice the floor opening up slightly and then at other times you will not notice this at all.
We source our timbers through reputable local and interstate suppliers & mills who obtain their logs through managed sustained forestry aligned with the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS).
Australian Timbers available in:
Select Grade: Is selected to omit: Knot Checks, Gum Pockets, Overgrowth of injury or other pockets; Tight Gum Veins in Backsawn timber, and has generally less visible characteristics the permissable features allowed are the stained insect holes and tight knots associated with voids.
Standard Grade: Is allowed a percentage of the features but does not reflect on the mechanical property of the timber.
High/Feature Grade: Is limitless and will have all character and features that are present in the timber when milled.
The width of the board determines the application. .80mm & Under may be secret nailed. Over .85mm face cover (and dependent on what it is secured to) is face nailed.
The thickness of the plywood going over concrete should be no less than .15mm
and for Wide Boards .19mm Plywood.
The wider the boards the more room for movement. The more structure is required to keep the floor stable during its expansion and contraction changes.
We base our applications on structure and how the floor will perform. Each layer is important to the finish. All jobs are customised to suit the application including the finer finishing details.
